Raised outside of Boston, in the types of places where portraits of JFK hang next to the Pope, Andrew’s path to speechwriting and democratic politics seems a bit preordained, in hindsight. That it happened in New York is what still confounds his Red Sox-loving relatives.
He got his start at New York City Hall as a speechwriter for Mayor Bill de Blasio, ultimately serving as his Deputy Director of Speechwriting and acting Chief Speechwriter. There, he learned how a global city runs, and doesn’t – and when, where, and how to communicate amidst constant crisis and chaos.
After his time working for the City, Andrew joined Mike Bloomberg’s staff, serving as Executive Writer for his foundation, Bloomberg Philanthropies, and as a speechwriter for all things Mike. As the founder of Bloomberg LP, and one of the world’s leading philanthropists, that meant writing about everything from emerging markets and enterprise datasets to ending the world’s reliance on coal and reducing gun violence.
Andrew was eventually lured back into government by the opportunity to serve as Director of Speechwriting for Kathy Hochul, who had recently been sworn in as the first female governor of New York. As a senior member of the Hochul Administration, he wrote multiple State of the State and Executive Budget addresses, responded to crises such as the mass shooting in Buffalo, and crafted the messaging behind one of the nation’s most progressive statewide agendas.
Upon leaving the governor’s office, Andrew worked for Square, where he led internal and executive communications. Prior to speechwriting, Andrew worked in digital media and journalism for various outlets, including Slate, where he really honed his snark and how to write for the internet – a habit he is either trying to kick, or lean into, depending on the principal.
Andrew is a proud University of Kentucky alum – which, combined with his Boston roots, makes him the most annoying sports fan on the planet. He lives in Brooklyn, NY with his partner, Lyndsey, and aptly-named rottweiler mix, Crash.
